I was born in Qinghai, China, a high-altitude plateau with never-ending mountains, lakes and meadows spread infinitely into the horizon. Its a gorgeous high-land plains with cold crispy air, where mountain foxes and butterflies sprinkle across the meadows.

My first experience on the importance of learning a language to open doors and opportunities came early in my high school life; a few foreign exchange students had joined us in our local school and they could only speak English. They didn't even speak a word of Chinese (Mandarin). I wanted badly to ask them about what it was like from where they originated from, their culture and way of life but all I could mutter were a few broken words of English. As much as I wanted to be friends with them, it was excruciatingly difficult to ask simple questions, yet alone have any form of decent conversation with them. They eventually didn't want to hang out with me because I couldn't speak their language. I was so sad.

It was at this stage that I told myself "I need to learn English, even if it just learning a few words (of vocabulary) every single day". I remembered that journey to be lonely as I was seemingly facing this uphill, unsurmountable task to learn a new language. No one in my family nor immediate friends knew any English. It was painful. And certainly much more harder doing it all alone.

I thought "why is it so difficult to find a language tutor who can help me?" as i blunder through mistakes after mistakes - grammar mistakes, pronunciation mistakes, vocabulary mistakes, sentence-construction mistakes. It was emotionally draining as I thought all that I am acquiring were bags of mistakes, and that I am nowhere near to learning a new language.

Eventually after many years, I was able to grasp academic-level proficiency English, where it opened doors of opportunities in my life. I was able to pursue my Masters Degree in University of Malaya (Malaysia) and finally completed my PhD (Philosophical Doctorate) in Architecture in the National University of Singapore (NUS) (Singapore).
